Natural Copper
Copper's unique combination of beauty, usability and excellent corrosion resistance has made it one of the most widely used architectural metals.
A truly pure metal, used since prehistoric times, copper offers a colour depth that changes with its environment. Below is more about the properties of copper, some of its history, and why we and our customers love this noble metal for rainwater systems.
Natural self-protection
The oxidation that gives copper its characteristic brown / green patina comes from exposure to the atmosphere where it's installed. The patina eventually covers the surface and adheres tightly to it, providing a protective layer against further weathering and corrosion. As this is a natural process, the slow but constant change in appearance blends beautifully with the elements over time. Copper also sits well alongside other natural materials like schist, untreated cedar and limestone.
A sustainable solution
Copper has excellent credentials as a sustainable material. It offers an incredibly long service life and is 100% recyclable, with a high residual value at the end of its life. It's estimated that 80% of all the copper ever mined is still in use today.
A brief history of copper
Copper was the first metal we used in any quantity. The earliest people working with copper found it could be easily hammered into sheets, and the sheets worked into shapes that grew more complex as their skill increased. Their arrow and axe heads, saws, scrapers and cutting tools were tougher and more reliable than those made from stone and flint, a massive step forward.
Although iron became the basic metal of every Western civilisation from Rome onwards, copper and its alloys, brass and bronze, were used wherever strength, durability and corrosion resistance were required, through the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution and on to the cutting-edge innovations of today.
